Spennymoor United, formed in 1901, was an amalgamation of Spennymoor Town and Weardale Ironopolis. The latter of these two teams probably being associated with the iron works of the Weardale Iron and Coal Company, that had opened in the town in 1853, closing down in November 1901. Spennymoor had a team playing in minor leagues since 1890 playing matches at the Wood Vue ground. However upon the formation of Spennymoor United, the old club, Spennymoor Town slipped into oblivion from the Mid Durham League. It was not until September 1904, when the club was re-organised "as a new club" that progress began to be made, thanks largely to a Mr Grant, they secured the use of their current ground, The Brewery Field. The Brewery Field had up until that time, been the home to a team game of a different kind, rugby union. In 1905, Spennymoor United were admitted to the Northern League. The membership of the league at that time included the "A" or reserve teams of Newcastle United, Middlesborough and Sunderland, as well as amateur teams, like Bishop Auckland. The first Northern League match at the Brewery Field took place on 2nd September, 1905, Spennymoor losing 2 - 1 to Darlington St. Augustine's.............
